What
is the difference between these SAP products?
(SAP S/4HANA Finance, Simple Finance, and Central Finance)
We usually encounter any difficulty throughout the branding of SAP’s Financial Management products. Part of that difficulty is due to the increasing velocity of new features, and part of the difficulty is due to product re-naming. We’re expecting to clear up some of that confusion with this post.
First off: “SAP Simple Finance” was a former name of what is now called SAP S/4HANA Finance. The term
“SAP Simple Finance” is no longer an official brand, but there are still many
people who use this term interchangeably because it was actively marketed by
SAP for a while.
S/4HANA is a business
suit made on top of SAP’s in-memory platform, HANA. The S/4HANA suite combines
ERP abilities across many different business areas such as HR, Sales, Finance,
Acquisition, Supply Chain, and more.
“SAP S/4HANA Finance” is
the area of the S/4HANA suite dealing specifically with Financial Management
solutions. It enables:
- One common view of financial data which is consistent company-wide, minimizing reconciliation efforts
- A Universal Journal for financial/controlling data
- Central Finance to consolidate multiple back end data sources
This last bullet brings
us to our next subject: Central Finance. “Central Finance” is actually an enhanced
deployment of a S/4HANA Finance system. In a perfect world, a S/4HANA Finance
system could be implemented and immediately replace all existing transactional
or FI/CO systems at once. However, as we know, an implementation of a system
this essential is a time consuming and sensitive project.
Central Finance is an
intermediate way of implementing a S/4HANA Finance system that minimizes any
disruption by allowing the existing Finance and Controlling applications to
remain in place and active, while still incorporating those same transactions
into the new S/4HANA Finance system by using SLT data replication. This can
reduce the risk of trying to replace multiple transaction systems all at the
same time.
With a Central Finance
configuration, you can have the greatest of both worlds: your attempted and
true transaction systems will remain in place, and you can get the benefits
of the power of S/4HANA Finance.
Since SAP S4/HANA Finance is part of the S/4HANA suite, it is important to understand what S/4HANA consists of. SAP S/4HANA consists of four components:
- The focus component: SAP gives the various finance capabilities and improvements as part of the functional/core component. You need to be on at least SAP Net Weaver 7.4, SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) 6.0 Enhancement Package 7, and SAP HANA version 1.0 to be able to consider a migration or upgrade to S/4HANA. A migration to S/4HANA from ECC 6.0 is a functional upgrade that includes the migration of transactional tables.
- The performance experience (UX) component: This SAP Fiori-based GUI component helps you interact with the core component through the user-friendly Fiori screens. It needs SAP Net Weaver 7.4 and SAP Gateway version 2.0. Note that this is an optional component and you can continue with your existing SAP GUI or Net Weaver Business Client as your user interface.
- The reporting/analytics component: This component allows real-time reporting and analytics using pre-packaged HANA Live views. The requirements for installation are SAP HANA Live 1.0 for SAP ERP and SAP HANA. This too is an optional component.
- App component: This component is a collection of analytical applications in the Financials suite for key financial decision-makers in an enterprise.
